So I've been recently watching Mad Men season 1 because my bestie let me borrow it a while ago and I finally have time. I was amazed at how everyone idealizes the 1950's values but the little to no equality between men and women shown through this television series is an interesting reminder that we have it pretty good right now.
Can't help but be thankful for living in a time period where women are respected (mostly) in the workplace and home and valued as not only secretaries but also CEOs. I'm not saying we're 100% equal still, but in the past half century women have been making huge strides towards equality. Now don't get me wrong, I appreciate a man who holds open doors, has manners, and remembers to treat ladies like ladies, but I enjoy being a partner in my relationship and can bring home and cook my own bacon (and so can Paul- he's a great cook).
One of the reasons I like to call Paul my partner is because we both have an equal stake in our relationship as well non gender specific roles that can be reinforced by language (what gender roles do you think of and reinforce when you say girlfriend/boyfriend?).
The next time people start talking about 50's ideals and how we should go back to the home and family being the center and stronghold of people's lives I might pass them the first season of Mad Men and let them watch as the men cheat on their wives, drink, and smoke, and women fight for equality in relationship and the workplace.
WooHoo for women's rights!
XOXO
